Synopsis

Terry Zwigoff's landmark 1995 film Crumb is an intimate documentary portrait of underground artist Robert Crumb, whose unique drawing style and sexually and racially provocative subject matter have made him a household name in popular American art. Zwigoff candidly and colorfully delves into the details of Crumb's incredible career, as well as his past, including his family of reclusive eccentrics, some of the most remarkable people you’ll ever see on-screen. At once a profound biographical portrait, a riotous examination of a man’s controversial art, and a devastating look at a troubled family, Crumb is a genuine American original.

Review

Robert Crumb certainly never wore any flowers in his hair that Summer of Love when he invented Underground Comics. Indeed, in each succeeding issue of Zap he spewed forth page after foolscap page of Hogarthian bile documenting the delusional nature of our Aquarian innocence. Director Terry Zwigoff has captured the complexity of this man in his straightforward, riveting documentary, allowing the helplessly voluble Crumb to tell us more than he ever meant to—just like he does in his comics. Only his art has allowed him to come to terms with his "eccentricities," an outlet not available to his two brothers; one of whom finally killed himself after many attempts. Two family members who make the strongest impression do so with their absence: Crumb's sisters, who wisely declined to participate.
