Synopsis

Meet Big and Little Edie Beale: high-society dropouts, mother and daughter, reclusive cousins of Jackie O., thriving together amid the decay and disorder of their ramshackle East Hampton mansion. An impossibly intimate portrait and an eerie echo of the Kennedy Camelot, Albert and David Maysles' 1976 Grey Gardens quickly became a cult classic and established Little Edie as a fashion icon and philosopher queen. Thirty years later, the filmmakers revisited their landmark documentary with a sequel of sorts, The Beales of Grey Gardens, culled from hours of never-before-seen footage recently found in the filmmakers' vaults.

Review

The lives of Edith Bouvier Beale and her adult daughter Edie are the subject of this moving documentary by the Maysles brothers. Secluded in their decaying Long Island mansion, these two eccentric women allow the morbid spectacle of their private melodrama to simply play itself out in front of the camera. Some have charged the directors with exploitation, although by revealing their subjects so unsparingly they go beyond voyeurism and challenge us to feel true compassion for these lonely human beings.

Big Edie and Little Edie Rock

Buddhaman wrote on 03/10/2008:

I first saw this movie back in 1976 as a teen. At the time, I had no idea what I was watching. However, I recently caught "Grey Gardens" on the Sundance Channel and was amazed at the impact this movie had on me. Edith Bouvier Beale the Aunt of former First Lady Jacquiline Kennedy Onassis and her daughter "Little Edie" (Jackie's Cousin) were the subjects of this 1976 documentary filmed by Albert and David Maysle. The inhuman conditions in their East Hampton Long Island beach home prompted Health Department authorities to order an eviction. Jackie rendered aid and staved off an eviction, however, the conditions during the filming were appalling. Feral cats and raccoons had free run of the house. The stench was reported to be unbearable. Big Edie and little Edie spend close to 20 years occupying 1 room of the house - which as far as I'm concerned is proof positive that there was some mental disorder at play. The Beales willingly allowed the Maysles into their private world to depict the mundane banality of their day to day existence. The film has achieved cult status over the years largely due to the outrageous costumes Little Edie sported during the filming and her Upper Crust pontifications about life and how she never got a chance to be anything due to her forced servitude to her mother (in a lot of ways it reminds you of "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"). Little Edie has also enjoyed an iconic status which I believe can be attributed to her indominatable spirit, and the tendency of most people to root for the underdog. The film also spawned a Broadway play. You will either hate the film and wonder what all the hoopla is about, or you will be captivated and find yourself watching it over and over again. I fall into the latter category!
