Synopsis

Set in a seemingly normal private all girls’ school where life is what you’d expect for young teenagers, until a past alumni returns as a teacher and strikes up a new friendship with two very different students. When a teacher is found, apparently having committed suicide, a horrific course of events ensues which inextricably links both the past and the present. As the body count rises, the memories of the deaths unleash the echoes of ghosts down the corridors. (Korean with English subtitles)

Review

Whereas many horror thrillers in the New Korean Cinema closely follow examples set by Japanese and American shockers, there are also flashes of great originality, and this first rate chiller is a landmark example. Closer in vein to the Italian horror films of the 1970s and fine old gothic classics like The Innocents or The Haunting, Whispering Corridors tells the eerie tale of a haunted girls’ boarding school. Director Park Ki-hyung balances shocks with restraint, generating unease in every detailed frame, and you needn’t have gone to a girls’ academy to know that the relationships and setting are totally authentic — you can almost smell the chalkboards. The foreboding atmosphere is perfectly suited for spooky late night viewing. A smash hit in Korea, Whispering Corridors has spawned two sequels (so far) and a wave of similar haunted school features, some of which are mighty good in their own right, and star Kim Kyu-ree has since become a veritable horror star.
